About

Hello there! I’m a solicitor at an international law firm and specialise in corporate crime, investigations and financial services regulation.

I had the idea for this website many years ago, but life and work took over, and it wasn’t until April 2024 that I managed to get it into a publishable state. It’s still evolving, and I’m excited to gradually expand the content and (hopefully) the audience.

This project was inspired by my own challenges securing a position in a city profession. I attended many interviews, but often fell at the final hurdle. The consistent feedback was that I needed to improve my commercial awareness.

I was already reading business publications such as the Financial Times and the Economist, but I struggled with them because they assumed a level of knowledge I just didn't have. It was only when I started to obtain a broader understanding of economics, politics, the city, and other commercial topics, that I was able to critically analyse world events and their impact on the economy, sectors, and individual businesses.

As someone from a non-professional background - my parents are shopkeepers and I’m part of the first generation to attend university - I didn’t have anyone to talk to about this. I was in the dark for a long time and thought I’d never get there. This experience motivated me to create a resource to guide others through similar journeys.

The purpose of this website is to help you develop your commercial awareness through providing knowledge content on key commercial topics.

For now, I won’t be summarising and analysing news articles for you. I may do in future, but there are already websites out there that do this. I want to teach you how to fish, rather than give you a fish - you know the saying. I think that’s the far better route, and will help you to perform well in any role that you do obtain, and not just at interview.

The purpose of this website is to help you Understand the World.

How to use this website

This website is split into a number of sections as follows:

1. Economics - providing an overview of key, micro and macroeconomic topics;
2. Business basics - covering topics such as: What is a business? What is a company? Other legal forms; How to read accounts; and much more;
3. The City - a discussion of what the city is, the various financial parties within the city, and the professional services firms (lawyers, auditors, consultants etc) that support them;
4. Miscellaneous - covering various topics of interest, such as financial crises, UK financial regulation, and others.

Sections 2 to 4 are still under development, and we will release articles in stages.

In the meantime, we recommend you read the articles in the economics section in order (they are numbered accordingly). Just one or two a day and you'll have a good grasp of basic economics within a few weeks.
